Bibliotheken hebben het zwaar. Bezuinigingen, dalende ledenaantallen en de digitalisering brengen de nodige uitdagingen met zich mee. Al sinds 1990 neemt het ledenaantal landelijk af. Zonde! Want mensen kunnen er lezen en leren, elkaar ontmoeten en kennis maken met kunst en cultuur.

Iedere provincie in Nederland is verantwoordelijk voor zijn eigen bibliotheekbeleid. Dat wordt vervolgens uitgevoerd door de provinciale ondersteuningsinstellingen (POI’s). In opdracht van Provincie Noord-Holland deden we onderzoek in The Base, naar hoe bibliotheken relevant kunnen blijven.

The Base is een bedrijfsverzamelgebouw op Schiphol. Naast een kinderdagverblijf en een sportschool is er ook een kleine bibliotheek gevestigd.

Prototypes are conversation starters

We spoke to several people in the library’s vicinity; the visitors, staff and tenants of The Base. From the experiments with different prototypes, we learned more about the (latent) needs of the target group. Among other things, we discovered that the library can become a partner of companies by serving their employees. However, this requires a proactive attitude, plus the ability to think beyond offering books. That further ‘thinking’ we did together. During sessions, we gave depth to the ideas. The result: rich service scenarios, describing the impact of each idea.
