Curriculum
The start of the curriculum was already made in some other meetings and sessions and reminded me a bit of a school for other innovation pioneers: Kaospilots (now known as Knowmads).
With about 10 professionals and students we started to make the basic structure for ‘module 3′, taking in account the following three lines: prototyping, creativity and design (project). 31Volts was happy to be invited; it’s really a good thing that service design is being taken into account in innovation and design education more and more.

Workshop ‘from the other side’
We are facilitating a lot of sessions, so it was a pleasure to be able to join one and be ‘on the other side’! I just loved to be allowed to throw out ideas, reflect, talk with the other participants and losing track of time.
(In our sessions we are always happy to motivate and actually see people’s creativity, new ideas and new contacts. My personal trap is that I would love to join myself in the conversations and the creative process and getting to know people. To a certain point this works well, but as a facilitator you have to take a step back and stand above the process and protect the group-dynamics.)

Results
Divided in three sub-groups we came up with somehow almost perfectly fitting and complementing projects, workshops, theory lessons, self-development and more. The core team was surprised and happy, and ready to start elaborating the program. My last advice would be to keep some space and flexibility for the student to fill in their own curriculum.
I’m curious about the first year: new (to-be) students, teachers and staff keep us updated please!

Minister van der Hoeven kondigde aan een “doe-tank” te starten alsmede een nieuwe subsidie voor organisaties die zich bezig houden met diensteninnovatie in de creatieve en financiële sector.

De keynote: Jeneanne Rae

Als keynote spreekster tijdens de Lecture was Jeneanne Rae uitgenodigd. De voormalig director van IDEO in Londen en de oprichtster en CEO van het toonaangevende Peer Insight.

In haar keynote presentatie gaf Jeneanne Rae zeer helder aan waarom de noodzaak voor diensteninnovatie juist nu zo groot is.

The reason why service innovation is getting more and more attention lately is the fact that business is changing as never before. The growth of the service economy has been accelerated by the profound changes in capability brought to us in the current information age. This has led to new customer demands and expectations that organizations have to deliver upon. Customers are becoming the main reference point for your strategy, not your direct competition.

Onderbouwd met enkele aansprekende cases uit hele uiteenlopende dienstverlenende sectoren ilustreerde Jeneanne wat volgens haar de randvoorwaarden zijn om succesvol in diensten te innoveren.

Delivering successful service innovations requires going beyond traditional innovation methods and mindsets. Organizations need to reallocate resources from pure science-based technology innovations to include more social research in order to understand user contexts and motivations. They need to employ more design thinking and design methods that already have proven to deliver valuable solutions in many other fields. It’s crucial to invest in change management as part of every service development program because unlike in manufacturing businesses, the collection of people, processes, and systems make up the “factory” in service organizations.

Service Design publicatie

Na afloop van de Lecture kregen alle genodigden een publicatie mee over diensteninnovatie en service design. We zijn er enorm trots op dat de inhoud van deze publicatie volledig door 31Volts verzorgd is! Bij deze willen we onze collega’s van STBY en DesignThinkers bedanken voor hun cases in de publicatie. Voorlopig is de publicatie alleen als een fysiek boek te krijgen maar we doen ons best om het zo snel mogelijk online te krijgen. Binnenkort zullen we op onze blog uitgebreid ingaan op deze publicatie.

De organisatie

Met deze Lecture lijkt 2009 echt het jaar te zijn waarin diensteninnovatie definitief op de agenda is gezet. De overheid investeert ondertussen structureel in thema en daarnaast blijkt de vraag vanuit het bedrijfsleven naar deze expertise sterk aan het toenemen is. Nederland heeft de potentie om een wereldwijd een toonaangevende rol te spelen rond diensteninnovatie.

Wat betreft de organisatie van de Lecture ben ik vol lof. Het is ze gelukt om een internationaal gerespecteerde spreekster naar Nederland te halen. Wat wellicht een veel grotere prestatie is, is het feit dat het de organisatie gelukt om een publiek samen te stellen waar een enorme energie in zat. Dit was gedurende de hele Lecure maar met name de debat ronden goed te merken. Overigens ook grote complimenten aan het optreden van de dagvoorzitter en de “act” van de dag. Erg goede afwisseling tussen inhoud, vermaak en discussie.
