45 students of HU, University of Utrecht, worked on ‘Learning Landscapes’ for the faculty ‘Economie en Management’ (FEM).

Service design workshop
Together with Fred Montijn and Remko van der Lugt from HU, we organized a 4 day service design workshop, for 25 students of this faculty FEM and 20 of Product Design and Engineering.

* New *.
I think we already described enough workshops on this blog so I won’t go into much detail about the program. What was new for us: next to several service design assignments and tools for the students, we prepared grids; for every step and deliverable. These filled in grids enabled us to present in an ordered way the rough materials to our client.
In the one special version of the report we put all the students’ materials, thoughts, notes and conclusions in between the processed report chapters.

Some photos of the one special version report
report Leaning Landscapes

I think this way of presenting service design results adds special value to the end result. Next to our conclusions and recommendations the report showed the students’ effort, process and learnings, together with their rich insights preceding their newly designed concepts. Since our client Eva could only be present during some plenary meetings, this elaborate report can help her and other readers to immerse into the materials and forming their vision.
The preparation took Fred some more time, but spared us time putting the report together.
Next tho the ‘special report’ there’s a summary PDF, containing only the chapters and some pictures of the rough materials.

10 co-design pressure cookers with SMEs, user involvement experts and design agencies.
[SME = Small and Medium Enterprise, in Dutch known as MKB.]

Usually the presumption is SMEs do not have the budget, skills nor knowledge as large companies do to thoroughly involve users in their process. Christine’s project is about to prove user involvement for SMEs is possible and profitable!
PhD candidate Christine deLille is doing her research for TUDelft and Hogeschool Utrecht. For this pressure cooker project she worked together with Syntens and Province of Utrecht. Today she presented her findings to a small group of people from Denmark, starting a likewise project.

What cases?
Christine matched 10 SMEs with 10 user involvement experts, design agencies to ‘run this experiment’. 31Volts attended this research project by doing two cases, which can be read [Dutch, sorry] here and here. More about the project and cases of other companies can be read here. [Dutch, sorry again!]

Co-Design session at publisher scala

Some of Christine’s findings and results:

All projects were finished satisfactory, 2 resulting in patents and 2 in a follow-up!

SMEs were amazed by their customers, the richness of qualitative insights and new methods.

Some SMEs are applying user involvement methods already themselves now, with experts as coach.

An advantage of SMEs above large companies is that SME’s are much more flexible and faster in adapting and changing. Although they lack the budget, skills and knowledge for elaborate user involvement, changing an SME’s mindset and strategy because of any new user insights is much more likely than a large company’s one.

So for SMEs: start yourself, start small and start today!

Make the results tangible and keep them alive

For design agencies a certain budget and time is needed for projects involving users and co-design. It can’t just be narrowed down to a few hundred euros or a few hours.

In short-on-time-and-budget user involvement projects it’s important to be flexible! Flexible in process, on methods, tools and amount of users involved. (Marcel Zwiers would probably say: ‘It’s no rocket science.’)

It was very interesting to see the final conclusions of the projects we worked on. Christine presented the project very good and clearly. Good to see that awareness of the value of user involvement is growing. Most of her findings we recognized and experienced in our cases as well and we learned as much as our 2 SMEs!
For me it was really cool to be the practitioner in these quick cases. In this short time we created much energy and results! As designers and co-creation experts we invested some extra time in these projects, because we of course wanted to make the best of it so at the end we put more effort in the projects than we got paid for. So I hope to gain more experience to do these projects more efficiently, or maybe Christine comes up with a suggestion of combining more interested stakeholders for the same user insights, to make it more profitable?

Interested in more?
The 11th of December will be the final presentation day, any SME, MKB or design agency interested can register and attend! (31Volts will organize a short workshop.)

PS. Next to being curious about Christine’s results and the Danish project, the reason I was attending the presentation today already is that the 11th is also the date of the event DesignforConversion, but that will be another blogpost.

Monday 21/9 we attended the kick-off of ‘Project Creative Xcellerator‘ organised by HU and HKU, two Utrecht universities of applied science, and Task Force Innovatie Utrecht.

The program in Seats2Meet started with some introductions and lectures. After the lectures the people in the audience could choose one out of 3 parallel sessions. 31Volts helped out our friend Remko van der Lugt, Lector at HU, to organise his creative pressure cooker.
Goal of our 1.5 hour session was to introduce the HU’s 3 focus areas and come up with ideas to accelerate Creative City Utrecht (by means of these 3 areas). Service Design is one of the 3 focus areas at this school, next to Cross-media and E-business.

Speedstorm results

About 40 people attended the session and took in the 5 minutes introduction on each subject. After each subject’s introduction, students, profs, business and municipality people were matched in duos to start another round of speedstorming on ideas for Creative Utrecht.
For ‘random’ matching we were inspired by a Kaospilots method; “Go find somebody with the same colour of….” (shirt, hair, eyes, …) which worked surprisingly well in combination with the speedstorming.
To bring the ideas a step further we introduced our 8 personas representing creative industry Utrecht, designed in an earlier 31V research project. Within the 1.5 hour and to great surprise of all the participants, we closed the session with their own 9 convincing elevator pitches (from persona’s perspective) on Creative Utrecht.

In the end 5 minutes presentation in a tight schedule and overloaded, interactive program is not much to fully communicate service design and 8 personas, however, just enough to attract people’s attention… So the drinks afterward were a good opportunity to get involved with people from our session and talk some more about service design and our projects. Not much more of our colleagues or other already successful creatives were present; work has to be done in stead of talking about it.
For 31V the goal of the afternoon was not exactly clear, but it’s a good thing helping out a friend, city Utrecht taking creative industries seriously and Service Design being communicated as one of the 3 focus areas in education!

To be continued…

Uitdaging

20 deelnemers?
Deelnemers waren o.a. architecten, ontwerpers, medewerkers van ProRail.
